  1. Define what a preposition is.

  2. Identify different types of prepositions (time, place, movement, agent, direction, instrument).

  3. Use prepositions correctly in sentences to show clear meaning.

🟢  Let us define prepositions

A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in the sentence.
Prepositions tell us when, where, how, or by whom something happens.

🟣 Types of Prepositions and Examples:

Type Example Explanation
Time I’ll study for two hours. Shows when something happens.
Place We slept under the canopy. Shows the location of the action.
Movement She ran up the hills. Shows movement or direction.
Agent The book was written by Ama Ata Aidoo. Shows who did the action.
Direction She went to the Boomerang Club. Shows where something is going.
Instrument Kwame comes by train. Shows what is used to do something.

Note:

  • “By” can be both agent (e.g., written by Ama) and instrument (e.g., travel by bus), depending on how it’s used.

Provide the following and ask learners to fill in with correct prepositions:

  1. I will read my book ___ two hours. (Time)

  2. The cat is hiding ___ the table. (Place)

  3. We drove ___ the bridge quickly. (Movement)

  4. The painting was done ___ Kofi.(Agent)

  5. She travelled ___ Accra yesterday. (Direction)

Assessment (10 minutes):

✔️ Ask learners to:

  • Create one sentence for each type of preposition.

  • Identify the preposition in each and name its type.

Example:

  • Sentence: We walked through the forest.

  • Preposition: through

  • Type: Movement
