👉  Can you tell me what an adverb does in a sentence?

An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, adjective, another adverb, preposition, or even a whole sentence.

🟢 Uses of Adverbs Beyond Verbs:

Function Example Explanation
Modify an Adjective That was a very funny comedian. Very modifies the adjective funny.
Modify another Adverb I saw many very fast-moving vehicles. Very modifies the adverb fast-moving.
Modify a Preposition/Prepositional Phrase The bullet went right through the shooter. Right modifies the preposition through.
Modify Indefinite Pronoun Nearly everybody bought the same vehicle. Nearly modifies the pronoun everybody.
Modify a Pre-determiner I paid more than three thousand Ghana Cedis. More than is modified by paid.
Modify Cardinal Numerals We will stay for about three weeks. About modifies the numeral three.

Write these in your books 

  1. The movie was quite interesting.

  2. They walked almost right into the trap.

  3. Nearly everyone in the class passed.

  4. I stayed for about two hours.

  5. She spoke very softly.

✏️  Expected Answer

  1. The movie was quite interesting.

    • Adverb: quite

    • What it modifies: the adjective interesting

    • ✅ It shows the degree of how interesting the movie was.

  1. They walked almost right into the trap.

    • Adverbs: almost, right

    • What they modify:

      • almost modifies the adverb right

      • right modifies the preposition into

    • ✅ It shows how nearly and directly they walked into the trap.

  1. Nearly everyone in the class passed.

    • Adverb: Nearly

    • What it modifies: the indefinite pronoun everyone

    • ✅ It shows the degree or amount of people who passed.

  1. I stayed for about two hours.

    • Adverb: about

    • What it modifies: the cardinal numeral two

    • ✅ It shows an approximate duration of time.

  1.  She spoke very softly.

    • Adverb: very

    • What it modifies: the adverb softly

    • ✅ It intensifies how softly she spoke.

👉 Learners should underline the adverb and state what it modifies.

✏️ Activity 2 – Create Sentences

In pairs, choose adverbs from a list and use them in sentences to modify:

  • an adjective

  • another adverb

  • a preposition

  • a numeral

  • a pronoun

Examples:

  • Adverbs: almost, very, nearly, about, quite, too, right, more than

 

A. Fill in the blanks with appropriate adverbs:

  1. He is a ______ talented singer. (Hint: adverb modifying adjective)

  2. We arrived ______ after the bell rang. (Hint: adverb modifying another adverb)

  3. The arrow went ______ over the fence. (Hint: adverb modifying preposition)

  4. ______ everyone left before the rain started. (Hint: adverb modifying pronoun)

  5. They will stay for ______ four days. (Hint: adverb modifying numeral)
