  1. Identify adjectives in descriptive sentences.

  2. Use adjectives to vividly describe people, places, objects, and materials.

  3. Construct short descriptions using appropriate adjectives in writing and speaking.

📘 What is an Adjective?

An adjective is a word that describes or adds more meaning to a noun. It tells us more about a person, place, object, or material.

🟢 Categories of Adjectives to Focus On

What it describes Examples
People (Participants) tall, bushy-haired, energetic, aggressive, shy
Places (Settings) serene, crowded, dusty, peaceful, modern, noisy
Objects/Materials smooth, shiny, rough, colourful, torn, faded
Textiles/Cloth silky, striped, checkered, embroidered, thick, thin

Let’s describe the players in a football match, or a dress someone is wearing. What words can we use to make our description interesting?

This may contain: the soccer players are competing for the ball in front of their opponents on the field

 

Words like aggressive, striped, noisy, or beautiful are adjectives. They help us paint a clear picture.

Kindly underline the adjectives and say what each describes.

  1. The team captain arrived wearing bushy hair.

  2. The goalkeeper made an amazing save.

  3. The hotel is situated in a serene environment.

  4. She wore a striped, shiny cloth to the event.

  5. He held a heavy, rusty metal box.

 

Work in pairs or small groups to complete short descriptive tasks:

  • Group A: Describe two football players on opposing teams using at least 4 adjectives.

  • This may contain: two soccer players standing next to each other in front of a stadium with the words messi and ronald on it
    E.g., “The tall, confident striker from Team A faced the short, aggressive defender from Team B.”

    E.g., “The rural village had narrow, dusty roads and peaceful, green fields.”

  • Group D: Describe any school object (e.g., desk, board, bag).
    E.g., “The wooden desk was old, scratched, and slightly shaky.”

Present your descriptions orally to the class.

B. Short Writing Task (5 marks):
Write a short paragraph (4–5 sentences) describing either:

  • A football match you watched

  • Your classroom environment

  • A cloth your parent wore
    Use at least five different adjectives in your description.
