Good day, class! Let’s play a quick game. I will say a noun and you will shout back the plural. Ready? One book… books! One pen… pens! Now, what if I say ‘one toothbrush’?

Aha! That’s what we’re learning today—compound nouns and how to use their singular and plural forms correctly!

This may contain: a poster with words and pictures on it that say compound nourishment in english

  • A compound noun is made up of two or more words that work together to name a person, place, thing, or idea.

  • Examples: toothbrush, mother-in-law, classroom, passer-by

I say ‘tooth + brush’, you say
 Toothbrush!

Do you know there are types of compound nouns?

They are:

  • Closed Form – The words are joined together.

    • Examples: toothbrush, classroom, sunflower

  • Hyphenated Form – The words are joined with hyphens.

    • Examples: mother-in-law, commander-in-chief, passer-by

  • Open Form – The words are written separately but function as one noun.

    • Examples: bus stop, high school, police station

  1. Add ‘s’ to the main word:

    • toothbrush → toothbrushes

    • classroom → classrooms

      Change the important word inside:

      • mother-in-law → mothers-in-law

      • passer-by → passers-by

Kindly get the plural form of the following:

1. Toothbrush

  • Plural: Toothbrushes

  • Sentences:

    • Singular: I forgot to pack my toothbrush for the trip.

    • Plural: We bought new toothbrushes for all the children.

2. Sister-in-law

  • Plural: Sisters-in-law

  • Sentences:

    • Singular: My sister-in-law is visiting us this weekend.

    • Plural: Both of my sisters-in-law attended the wedding.

3. Schoolchild

  • Plural: Schoolchildren

  • Sentences:

    • Singular: The schoolchild raised her hand to answer the question.

    • Plural: The schoolchildren lined up quietly after break.

4. Housekeeper

  • Plural: Housekeepers

  • Sentences:

    • Singular: The housekeeper cleaned the guest room thoroughly.

    • Plural: All the housekeepers wore uniforms in the hotel.


5. Man-of-war

  • Plural: Men-of-war

  • Sentences:

    • Singular: A man-of-war patrolled the coastline during the war.

    • Plural: Several men-of-war were stationed at the naval base.
