CYCLIC MOVEMENT IN THE ENVIROMENT:
KEY WORDS: Cyclic movement, Analogue clock Pendulum Limbs
In our previous lessons, we learnt that things that move in cyclic repeatedly have a cyclic movement. in this lesson we will identify and use cyclic movements that occur in our environment.
A cyclic movement is the movement of objects around repeatedly in an orderly manner. it also refers to activities that are done repeatedly in the same way. Examples of cyclic movement objects are: 1. second-hand on analogue clock. 2. Merry-go-round. 3. Pendulum. 4. Movement of Limbs.
- THE SECOND-HAND ON THE ANALOGUE CLOCK:
Take a look at the face of this clock. The second hand of a clock moves from point, goes round and comes back to the same point where it started. It moves in the same order within the same period over and over again. Each move of the second hand is called a second. So we say that, the second hand of an analogue clock moves in a cyclic repeatedly. This movement is called a cyclic movement.
2. MERRY-GO-ROUND: Look at the picture. This is merry-go-round. A merry-go-round moves in a cycle. T start from one point, goes round and come back the point where it started. It continues to move in the same way over and over again until it comes to a stop. So we say that merry-go-round is a cyclic movement.
3. MOVEMENT OF THE PENDULUM:
The back and forth movement of a swinging pendulum is another example of a cyclic movement. Do you know what a pendulum is? A pendulum is usually a small ball that is tied to a string. The string is hanged from a fixed point so that it can swing freely. The fixed point is called pivot. When the pendulum is pulled back and released, it swings back and forth in the same way repeatedly. The repeated back and forth movement of the pendulum shows a cyclic movement
4. MOVEMENT OF OUR LIMBS:
Our limbs are our legs and hands. Any time we are walking, our hands and legs move back and forth in a repeated manner. The repeated movement of our limbs is a cyclic movement. Look at the illustration below.
